Neil Redfearn is delighted that he will be able to guide a number of young players he helped produce at Leeds United into the club's senior side.

The academy chief is on the brink of being officially confirmed as the new permanent Leeds United boss, building on a number of interim stints he has enjoyed in the job.

And Redfearn, who joined Leeds in 2009, admits he could never envisage at that time being promoted to boss the team.

"I don't think you ever think like that to be honest. I think when you first come in you lose yourself in the role you're in and that was the case with me", he told LUTV.

"To have been here for six years now and to have seen these players come through and the young players that are part of our set-up, it's a real proud experience when you see kids that you have had through the years pull on the white shirt. It's a great feeling."

And the former midfielder now feels he can guide players he helped to produce to flourish in the first team.

"I have the chance now to guide them in charge of the first team, which is even better.

"I know the club like the back of my hand, which gives me a little bit of an advantage. Hopefully I can pick it up and run with it", he added.

Redfearn also believes he is ready for the job of trying to guide Leeds back to the Premier League, with his apprenticeship not having been in vain.

"It's not a case of being frightened of it or not ready for it or anything like that. It is the right time and it is the right time for the football club as regard the young players. It will bring the academy closer to the first team, definitely."
