Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has explained that Manchester City’s Yaya Toure “looks a bit bored” to him, ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby.

The midfielder, who has been the Citizens’ most influential player in recent years, has been below par by his standards this term.

The Ivory Coast international has thus far managed to score just two goals in 14 appearances in all competitions for the English champions in the 2014/15 campaign.

However Scholes, who is aware that Toure possesses the quality to up his game for big matches, feels the 31-year-old can perform better if he plays alongside Fernandinho rather than summer signing Fernando.

"I don't think the central midfield is right, and that they are getting the best out of Yaya Toure", Scholes wrote in his weekly column for The Independent.

"He still looks laboured to me, you might even say he looks a bit bored. He has the ability to step it up when he wants to, and that could be the case on Sunday.

"My view is that the better midfield partner for him is Fernandinho rather than Fernando. Fernandinho just seems to have more to his game."

Toure, who joined Manchester City from Barcelona in 2010, has amassed 197 appearances for the club, scoring 54 times and providing 37 assists.

He has a further three years left on his current contract with the Eastlands club.
