AC Milan could face Manchester United in a glamour friendly in the new year, as each club look to fill the gap in their midweek scheduled caused by a lack of European football.

Both AC Milan and Manchester United endured poor domestic campaigns last term, which meant neither qualified for any form of European football in the current season.

Midweek friendlies to fill the gap have been mooted, something Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal recently admitted he is on board with.

And now AC Milan and Manchester United could meet, with Rossoneri director Umberto Gandini confirming talks are taking place.

"This is something we have been talking about for a few weeks and we have a committed interest to do something together", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"It's just a question to find the right date and then to find the right place", Gandini added.

Both AC Milan and Manchester United are desperate to return to the Champions League for next season, but are set to take the opportunity to earn a lucrative amount by facing each other in a mid-season contest.
