Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has urged his old club not to let Steven Gerrard leave Anfield at the end of this season.

Gerrard, who has seen his performances criticised by some sections of the Liverpool faithful this term, sees his contract with the Reds expire next summer.

He admitted yesterday that he intends to play on beyond this season, meaning if he is not offered a new deal at Liverpool he will look to go elsewhere.

But Fowler simply cannot imagine Gerrard playing for any club other than Liverpool.

"Speaking from a selfish point of view, I love Steven Gerrard and I'd love him to stay at Liverpool", Fowler told BBC Radio 5 live.

"It's like Ryan Giggs at Manchester United – players come into the club and are instantly lifted by seeing Gerrard.

"He might not be as good as he used to be but he's still a class act."

And Fowler thinks if Gerrard does quit Liverpool then he could end up playing for one of the club's Premier League rivals as it might be the best offer in town.

"The common consensus is that he will go abroad if he did leave Anfield, but if he did become available I think clubs in the Premier League would want him. He's still that good a player."
