Wayne Rooney admits that Louis van Gaal is challenging the Manchester United players to do a number of things they have never done before.

Rooney returned from suspension to face Manchester City today in the Manchester derby, but he was unable to stop his side slipping to a 1-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

But the England captain feels the signs of Van Gaal's reign are clear to see and the Red Devils are moving in the right direction.

However, with Van Gaal asking players to do things they are unused to, time will be needed.
