West Ham United striker Andy Carroll has insisted that he was delighted to return to action during his side’s goalless draw with Aston Villa on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who underwent ankle surgery in July, made his first appearance of the season when he came on as an injury-time substitute at Upton Park.

Carroll almost marked his return with a goal, but his late effort was saved by Aston Villa custodian Brad Guzan.

And the former Liverpool man, who credited the Hammers’ medical staff for making him fit again, was ecstatic after his successful return to action, following a frustrating few months on the sidelines.

"It is a great feeling to be back out on the pitch", he told West Ham TV.

"It took a long time, a lot of hard work and I have to give credit to all of the medical staff for getting me back fit. It has been a long time and getting on the pitch is a great feeling.

"I was edging to get on a bit earlier, but the gaffer saved me for the last five minutes. I had a great chance and the keeper pulled off a great save."

Carroll, whose progress at West Ham has been seriously hampered by injuries, has thus far made 41 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring nine times and providing nine assists.
