The sporting director of Cruzeiro believes that Italian clubs cannot afford his side's jewel, Everton Ribeiro.

Ribeiro has been increasingly linked with Juventus in recent weeks, with the Bianconeri keen on beating a number of clubs to the midfielder's signature.

Indeed, Liverpool and Manchester United have seen their names mentioned in connection with the Brazilian, who claimed last season he would not be distracted by their interest: "I have not talked to my agent yet, I asked [him] to speak only with Cruzeiro and let me concentrate only on the team."

And for sporting director Alexandre Matos, Italy is just not an option for the midfielder, who can also operate as a winger.

"The Italians don't have the possibility, I think, to afford Everton", he explained to Tutto Mercato.

"For us he costs €20m.

"Italian football is in a difficult time and I do not think they can afford one of our crown jewels."

Asked whether a Premier League club will come for Ribeiro, Matos replied: "We expect a concrete proposal, that is from one club or another, but there's no hurry."

Ribeiro has won international favour under new Brazil coach Dunga, with his strong performances in domestic football in the South American country further bringing him to the notice of Europe's elite.
