Ron Vlaar, at the centre of a transfer saga due to an expiring contract at club level, is set to miss the Netherlands’ European Championship qualifier against Latvia on Sunday after suffering a calf injury during his side’s 3-2 loss to Mexico in a friendly last night.

The Aston Villa defender, who was making his first international appearance since the World Cup, had to be replaced in the 23rd minute of the encounter at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Vlaar only returned to action after recovering from another calf injury, but Holland boss Guus Hiddink insisted that the centre-back’s latest setback had nothing to do with his previous calf problem.

However the manager, who has now lost four of the five games since taking charge of the Oranje after the World Cup, admitted that the injury Vlaar picked up against the Mexicans looked serious.

"It does not look good", Hiddink was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.

"Ron has trouble with his calf. It's not the same place as last time, which was totally healed.”

Vlaar, whose present contract with Aston Villa is set to expire in the summer, has 32 caps and a goal for Holland to his name and has been linked with a January move to Arsenal and Manchester United.
