Former Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen has taken a role as a consultant with MLS side Philadelphia Union.

Meulensteen has been out of work since being sacked by Fulham last year and had been tipped to take over as coach at the MLS outfit.

However, the Dutchman is providing his expertise as a consultant and advising Philadelphia on operations and structure at the club.

The American side are keen to appoint a sporting director, but want Meulensteen to first analyse what is needed at the club.

And it is a challenge the Dutchman is happy to take up.

He told a press conference earlier today: "First of all, I’d like to thank Philadelphia Union, Jay Sugarman, it’s great to have the faith and trust of being brought on as a consultant. I have been in the United States for many, many years before. I’ve kept a close eye on the development of soccer, including the MLS.

"And it’s a growing league – it’s an emerging league. It grows from strength to strength, year in and year out. And to be given the opportunity to join a franchise like the Union on a consultant basis is a very exciting one."
