New Schalke coach Roberto Di Matteo believes that the Ruhr giants have the potential to be amongst the top 13 clubs in world football.

Di Matteo was handed the reins at Schalke early last month. His last spell in management was with Chelsea, who he led to the FA Cup and the Champions League, clinching the latter on German soil against Bayern Munich.

And the former midfielder has big plans for Schalke, who he considers have the potential to be one of Europe's elite sides.

Speaking to German daily Bild, Di Matteo said: "Of course I've set myself a lot to do with Schalke and in my view they should be the 12th or 13th best club in the world."

However, the former Italy midfielder is well aware he may not be afforded a long period to make good on his plans.

"In modern football there are only a few examples of coaches who have been at a club for a long time.

"We all know that patience is short these days."
