Manchester United and Liverpool are closely monitoring the situation of Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero at Sampdoria.

Despite a stellar World Cup with Argentina, the 27-year-old goalkeeper found himself on the bench at Sampdoria during the start of the season.

His frustrations boiled over last month when he said that he is desperate to fix the situation in January, indicating that he was ready to leave the club.

But in an unexpected turn of events, the Argentine has regained his place in the Sampdoria starting eleven after Emiliano Viviano sustained an injury last month.

Romero is making the most of the situation, but the English duo are still keen on signing the shot-stopper in January, according to Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset.

Simon Mignolet’s inconsistent showing this season has forced Liverpool to look for a strong challenger for the Belgian and Manchester United are looking for a formidable back-up option for David de Gea.

Romero’s contract with Sampdoria is set to expire next summer and it remains to be seen whether the Argentine continues to be first choice at the club even after Viviano returns or will he look to force a move through in January.
