Real Sociedad full-back Carlos Martinez is not convinced that David Moyes is a defensive coach.

The Scot was unveiled as the new manager of La Real last week in San Sebastian. He replaced Jagoba Arrasate, who was sacked after a string of poor results.

Moyes will be looking to rebuild a reputation that suffered severe damage last season at Manchester United, where he oversaw the club’s worst season in the Premier League era.

One of the criticisms that have been levelled against the Scot is that his tactics are too defensive in nature and he is more of a reactive manager than a proactive one.

But after training under the 51-year-old for a week, Martinez hasn’t seen any evidence that supports the notion that the Scot is defensive with his tactics.

“No, we have not seen much of him but don’t think so [that he is defensive]”, the 28-year-old told Mundo Deportivo.

“Everton had some great seasons, playing good football and I don’t think a coach can be ‘amarrategi’ [a Basque term for defensive] in Manchester.

“It is clear that he wants to win and he also doesn’t want us to concede goals but that doesn’t make him ‘amarrategi’.

"He likes to control the ball and play but also wants us to defend hard.”
