Brazil legend Romario believes his compatriot Neymar can overshadow Lionel Messi in the near future.

Neymar, who plays alongside Messi at Barcelona, enjoyed a great 2014 World Cup before missing the semi-final clash against Germany with a back injury.

On the other hand, Messi won the Golden Ball award after guiding Argentina to the final, where they lost 1-0 to Germany.

However, Romario feels Neymar can become a greater player than Messi, who recently joined Raul as the Champions League’s joint record goalscorer.

"He has everything to be greater than Messi”, he told Revista Trip.

“Messi may have already written history, but Neymar can make an even bigger impact."

Romario further added that 22-year-old Neymar has greater chance of tasting World Cup success than four-time Ballon d'Or recipient Messi, 27.

"Messi can perhaps play one more World Cup, let alone win it, but Neymar still has three or four more to play", he added.

Neymar, who joined Barcelona from Santos in 2013, has thus far made 55 appearances in all competitions for the Catalan giants, scoring 27 times and providing 16 assists.

The forward has 60 caps and 45 goals for Brazil to his name.
