Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has explained that defeating Spain 1-0 in a friendly last night was the ideal way to cap off a great year for his nation.

Joachim Low’s side, who won the 2014 World Cup in the summer by beating Argentina in the final, edged out the contest at the Estadio de Balaidos, courtesy of Kroos’ 89th minute strike.

However, the Germans have been wobbly since their World Cup triumph, losing to Argentina in a friendly before tasting defeat against Poland and drawing with Ireland in 2016 European Championship qualifying.

But Kroos, who insisted Germany are a “good team”, admitted that a win over Spain was the best way to end their successful year.

“Well, we lost against Poland, but we didn’t play badly there. We are a good team”, the Real Madrid player told Spanish daily AS.

“What’s good is that this victory against Spain put the finishing touch on a great year, as it has been for Germany in 2014.

“Either way, we said before playing this match that the result would not change the year for us. We won the World Cup.”

Germany, who are currently second in their qualification group, three adrift of leaders Poland, will next face Georgia in March.
