Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney admits that seeing Danny Welbeck play for Arsenal seems weird to him, but he believes the youngster needed the move to further his career.

At Manchester United since he was eight, Welbeck switched to Arsenal this summer after Louis van Gaal failed to assure him regular first team football as a striker.

Since moving to the Emirates, the striker has scored ten goals for club and country and has been deployed in his favourite central striker’s role.

Rooney admits that he still finds it hard to see the boyhood Red Devils fan in Arsenal colours, but admits that the striker needed the move to develop as a player.

The Manchester United captain is pleased with the way the local Manchester boy has settled in at Arsenal and scoring goals for the club.

"Of course, Danny has been here all of his life", Rooney told MUTV. "He is a Manchester lad so it is weird seeing him [there]. But that's football nowadays and players move on.

"I think, for Danny, and for his own personal career, it was probably the best move for him.

"He's done great and scored a few goals and is playing well. Danny gives you what he always gives you – a good shift. He works hard for the team.

"At times, as I said to him, he works a bit too hard but he's scoring goals and he's doing well."
