Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal believes Danny Welbeck will develop better at Arsenal as the striker plays regularly for the Gunners.

The Red Devils, who already had Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie in their ranks, boosted their strike force further in the summer by roping in Radamel Falcao from Monaco on a season-long loan deal.

As a result, Manchester United sold Welbeck to Arsenal on transfer deadline day as the England international was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old has been in good form for his new employers, scoring five times and providing three assists in 12 appearances.

And Van Gaal backed Welbeck, who was often played out on the wings during his spell at Manchester United, to become a better player at Arsenal.

"If a player plays in a fixed position, he develops better”, he was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.

“It is for everyone to see that he plays a lot now.

“That was the stumbling block at United."

Welbeck will face his former club tomorrow when Arsenal welcome Manchester United to the Emirates Stadium for a Premier League fixture.
