Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has shrugged off Manchester United's alleged interest in defender Jan Vertonghen by dubbing the Belgian "very important" for his side.

Vertonghen, who has recently been linked with Manchester United, has been in and out of the Tottenham side of late, leading to speculation he could be on his way in January.

But Pochettino does not want to lose the defender and claims his chopping and changing is simply due to the fact that Tottenham are involved in a number of competitions.

"I am happy with Jan, for us he's an important player", the Argentine was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"We're in three competitions, we change the team a lot."

Pochettino also admits that he must find a way to address Spurs' poor recent form, with the side having lost four of their six Premier League games at White Hart Lane this term.

"My job as a head coach is to find a solution, get more positive results. We need to be more strong in all areas. I'm confident with the players and the club", he explained.

Tottenham take on Hull City in a Premier League clash at the KC Stadium this weekend.
