Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney feels his side's 2-1 win at Arsenal this evening can kick-start their season.

Arsenal huffed and puffed in the first half, enjoying much the better of the early exchanges and appearing the more likely to score.

But they could find no way past the Manchester United defence, David de Gea making a number of saves, and the two teams headed in 0-0 at half-time.

Manchester United then took the lead in the 56th minute through a Kieran Gibbs own goal, sparking a push from Arsenal, which even saw Olivier Giroud brought off the bench as they tried to save the game.

Arsenal though left themselves open on the counter attack and Rooney got on the end of an Angel di Maria ball to slot home and make it 2-0.

Giroud did score though, hitting a 20-yard shot, but it was too little too late for the hosts.

And now Rooney, who was delighted with the win, is looking for Manchester United to build on the first away win of Louis van Gaal's reign.

"We're taking each game as it comes and we hope now we can go on a good run of games and judge the position we're in after Christmas", he told Sky Sports.

"We've got two home games coming up and we want to build some momentum now.

"I think it's a very important victory", Rooney added.
