Emre Can has revealed that he sees Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as a big brother and guiding light.

Liverpool snapped Can up from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer after meeting a release clause in his contract at the BayArena.

The German took time to get going at Anfield, but has featured recently, including in Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea before the international break, a game in which he scored.

And Can feels Gerrard has had a big impact on his Liverpool career thus far, especially boosting his confidence before the Chelsea match.

"He told me it was a big game but it was my turn to shine", he told his club's site.

"I see myself as a similar player to Steven but I don't know if I'll ever match all the success he has had.

"He has had a great career and is still playing very well. I like playing next to him – he helps me out and looks after me, like a big brother. He is still very influential", Can continued, before pointing out he feels his fitness has now improved since the start of the campaign.

"The goal gave me a confidence boost, especially after struggling a little bit at the start of the season. I was never quite 100 per cent fit for the first couple of months, and in England that can be crucial."
