Aston Villa custodian Brad Guzan has called on his side to build on their goalless draw with West Ham United before the international break by claiming a result against Southampton tonight.

The stalemate at Upton Park enabled the Villains to put an end to their wretched run in the Premier League which saw them lose six games on the trot.

And Guzan, who admitted that losing six consecutive matches was utterly frustrating for his side, underlined the importance of the point gained against the Hammers.

The goalkeeper now wants Aston Villa to continue their revival by coming out with a decent result against the highflying Saints at Villa Park.

"Every team from top to bottom, they go through tough spells”, Guzan explained to the club’s official site.

"It's how you come out of those tough spells which speaks volumes as a group.

"For us the game against Southampton is a massive chance to build on the result at West Ham.

"I think whether you lose six games on the bounce or one game, there's always a feel of disappointment. Being a professional you never want to lose.

"You're fighting and scrapping in training not to lose a five-a-side game. Guys didn't get to a professional level by accepting losing.

"When you lose six on the bounce, it's extremely frustrating. But that's when you need big characters and guys to step up and say, 'right okay, I'm going to do anything in my power to get things right'.

"You need that spirit and belief especially when you're going through a tough time. For us the point at West Ham was massive."

Aston Villa are currently 17th in the Premier League table with 11 points from as many outings, while Southampton occupy second spot in the standings with 25 points.
