Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie has come to the aid of under fire Reds defender Dejan Lovren and has backed him to eventually come good at Anfield.

Lovren switched to Liverpool from Southampton this summer on the back of a strong last season at the south coast club.

But the Croatian has struggled to replicate his Saints’ form at Anfield this term and has failed to provide much needed leadership to the Liverpool backline.

Liverpool have conceded 18 goals so far this season in the league and the defensive performances of the new summer signing have come under intense criticism.

But the former Reds stopper has defended the Croatian and has backed Lovren to gradually grow into his role at Anfield.

"I quite like Lovren, he's going through a sticky spell, but I think he'll come good”, Gillespie told BBC Radio 5 live.

Lovren will need to be at his best as Liverpool must win their Champions League encounter against Ludogorets on Wednesday to keep their hopes of qualifying for the last 16 of the tournament.
