Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal may be playing his part in trying to help Bayern Munich beat Manchester City in the Champions League.

Van Gaal bossed the Bavarians from 2009 until 2011 and is widely credited with putting the foundations in place which helped Jupp Heynckes mastermind a remarkable Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League treble in 2013.

The Dutchman is now firmly ensconced in the Manchester United hot seat and recently saw his side lock horns with Manchester City in the Manchester derby.

But with Bayern Munich in town to play the Citizens in the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium, Van Gaal slipped into the German champions' hotel on Monday.

The Dutchman spent around 45 minutes catching up with former players, both at club and international level, and chatting to coach Pep Guardiola.

Van Gaal will no doubt have taken time to pass on tips as to how the Citizens can be attacked, though Bayern Munich, who beat the English champions in September at the Allianz Arena, may feel comfortable of repeating the feat in any case.

The current Manchester United manager led many of the Bayern Munich squad to the Champions League final in 2010.

However, they succumbed to Jose Mourinho's rampant Inter side, who won on the way to their own treble.
