Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie feels that the club’s current struggles are down to the squad’s lack of confidence.

Liverpool have suffered four back-to-back defeats in all competitions and have collected only one point from their last four league fixtures.

The dire run of form has resulted in the club languishing in 12th in the league table on 14 points, their worst points total at this stage of the season since the 1992/93 campaign.

Yesterday’s 3-1 loss against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park was their third league defeat in a row and Gillespie senses a lack of confidence in the club’s play this season.

He added that their midfield play is too tedious and the defensive performances have left lot to be desired for this term.

"I think there is a total lack of confidence", Gillespie told BBC Radio 5 live.

"The way Liverpool want to play, nice crisp, sharp passing, they are just taking too many touches in the middle of the park.

“The defence is weak at times and they are getting over-exposed."
