Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has sought to clarify speculation about why he attended Bayern Munich's team hotel last night.

Van Gaal, who coached Bayern Munich from 2009 until 2011, was spotted heading into the team hotel in Manchester, with the Bavarians in town to take on Manchester City in the Champions League.

It was soon claimed Van Gaal was there to talk over potential transfers for a number of Bayern Munich players to Manchester United.

But Van Gaal has rubbished that.

"I was not there for Bayern, but to see Arjen Robben", he was quoted as saying by Soccer News.

The Dutchman also stressed he would not dine with the Bayern Munich squad in Manchester.

Van Gaal was keen to sign Robben for Manchester United in the summer, but the Netherlands winger was forced to disappoint his former national team boss and stayed put at the Allianz Arena.
