Barcelona star Lionel Messi expressed his delight at becoming the Champions League’s record goalscorer after netting a hat-trick against APOEL last night.

The Argentine international, who was level on 71 Champions League strikes with Raul before the contest, surpassed the Real Madrid legend after scoring in the 38th minute.




Messi then scored two more goals in the second half to take his Champions League goalscoring tally to 74.

And the 27-year-old, who was extremely happy to become the competition’s record goalscorer, also underlined the importance of Barcelona coming out victorious against the Cyprian outfit.
 


“I am very happy”, he told UEFA’s official site.

“It is fantastic to achieve this record in this beautiful and important competition.

“But besides that, it was an important match for us today and we managed to get the three points.

“We played a great match and managed to win, and that is what is really important.”

Barcelona, who opened the scoring against APOEL through Luis Suarez, need to beat Paris Saint-Germain in their final group stage game next month to top Group F.
