Brendan Rodgers has defended Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet after he dropped a howler against Ludogorets Razgrad in the Champions League this evening.

In just the third minute of the game, a Ludogorets player drilled the ball goalwards from about 18 yards out, with Mignolet then spilling what appeared a tame effort, which bounced up, directly into the path of another Ludogorets player, who scored.

Liverpool were 1-0 down, although they soon fought back to lead 2-1. However, they did concede at the death, with the Champions League game ending as a 2-2 draw.

Rodgers though feels Mignolet was undone by a bobbly pitch, more than a goalkeeping error.

"The pitch was a wee bit bobbly and in both the 18 yard goal [areas] the ball popped up a few times for the goalkeepers", Rodgers told Sky Sports.

"Tonight it's a real confidence booster for us", the Liverpool manager continued, saluting his side's performance.

"They are a really, really difficult team to play against, they are technically good, they've surprised a lot of people this season, got bright players, pitch was a bit bouncy and a bit difficult."

Liverpool now need to beat Basel in their final Champions League group game to qualify for the last 16.
