Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes that his side made a mental point this evening in the Champions League after they beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0.

Arsene Wenger's men wasted no time in grabbing an early lead at the Emirates Stadium when Yaya Sanogo scored with just two minutes on the clock.

The Gunners, who only needed a point to qualify, then added a second in the second half when Alexis Sanchez scored in the 57th minute.

Borussia Dortmund huffed and puffed, but had no answer to the Gunners on English soil.

And the Gunners grabbed an impressive 2-0 win over Jurgen Klopp's men.

For Mertesacker, the response Arsenal provided to their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the weekend, was perfect, with real, genuine mental strength shown.

"It was a solid performance, especially defensively", he explained to Sky Sports.

"We didn't give them too much. We were solid at the back. We have had a few disappointing results recently. That was a mental test and we are strong enough. We can continue now.

"It's good to score an early goal but over the 90 minutes we were solid and that's the key.

"After Anderlecht and Manchester United, we dropped mentally a bit. We were even stronger today. We learned form disappointments in the last weeks."
