Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes that the Reds are wasting their time with Mario Balotelli.

Lawrenson, who turned out for Liverpool between 1981 and 1988, winning five league titles, three League Cups, one FA Cup and one European Cup, feels the Italian is simply a "show pony".

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers paid £16m to sign Balotelli from AC Milan over the summer, but the striker has yet to score in the Premier League for his new club.

He has also been accused of looking disinterested throughout games and being unwilling to put a shift in for the team.

And Lawrenson does not see things improving with Balotelli.

He told the BBC: "If you don't get the ball into him, he turns around and gesticulates. You can't do that. You can't demean your team-mates.

"I don't think you will ever turn him into the player a lot of people think he can be.

"He's just a show pony", Lawrenson added.
