Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson does not expect his old club to sack Brendan Rodgers and feels it would be unfair to judge the Northern Irishman until Daniel Sturridge is back and fit.

Rodgers spent over £100m on new players in the summer, but has taken last season's runners-up backwards this term, with the Reds having lost six of their 12 Premier League games so far.

Liverpool did stay alive in the Champions League last night however, drawing 2-2 with Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad, meaning if they beat Basel in their final group game they will qualify for the last 16.

Rodgers is under immense pressure, but Lawrenson feels it would only be fair to hold back on taking a view on the manager until Sturridge is back and fit for selection.

"I don't think there's any doubt about that", Lawrenson told the BBC when asked whether Liverpool will stick with Rodgers.

"It's got even more knee-jerk. You lose a game, you're an idiot, you win and you're an absolute hero. I don't think there's any great clamour from the owners to get rid of him.

"This is his time, when you're not winning games, for him to show what he can do as a manager.

"I think the time to judge Liverpool will be when they have Daniel Sturridge back and he has been back for six to 10 matches."

Liverpool are next in action this coming weekend when they host Stoke City at Anfield.
