Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic has underlined the importance of winning their Champions League group after his side’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal last night.

BVB, who headed into the fixture on the back of four consecutive wins, needed just a point to seal top spot in Group D.

However, an early goal from Yaya Sanogo and a second half Alexis Sanchez strike meant the German giants returned from the Emirates Stadium empty handed.

And Subotic, whose side still remained top of their group despite the defeat, urged Dortmund to claim a positive result in their final group stage game against Anderlecht next month in order to win Group D.

“It is extremely [important to finish top], that’s why we wanted to seal the deal today [Wednesday]”, he told UEFA’s official site.

“We knew Arsenal were going to be tough, but we also knew that they are beatable. Our plan was to take home a point, but sadly that didn't happen.

“Now we have the next game [at home to Anderlecht] to seal the deal and we have to do it.

“At this level [finishing top] can be a big help for the next round and we have the goal set to finish first.”

Dortmund, who defeated the Gunners by the same scoreline in the corresponding fixture in Germany, have 12 points from five games, two ahead of second-placed Arsenal.
