Liverpool are intensifying their efforts to land Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero in the January transfer window in response to Simon Mignolet's woes between the sticks.

Romero was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, but the Argentine stayed put in Italy with Sampdoria.

Despite a stellar World Cup with Argentina, he found himself on the bench during the start of the season and his frustration boiled over in October when he said that he was ready to the club.

But in a surprising turn of events, the Argentine has regained his place in the first eleven after Sampdoria’s first choice shot-stopper Emiliano Viviano sustained an injury and Romero has started the last five league games.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Liverpool are still keen to land the goalkeeper in January and are stepping up their interest by establishing initial contact with the player’s representative.

The indifferent form of Mignolet, who was at fault for Ludogorets' first goal in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool last night, has forced Brendan Rodgers to make recruiting a goalkeeper in January a top priority and Romero is a key target for the club.

And with the Argentine’s contract expiring in the summer, he may also be available for a nominal fee in the winter transfer window.
