Stoke City have seen their preparations for Saturday's trip to Anfield to face Liverpool hit by a virus.

The Potters, who are aiming to continue Liverpool's disastrous start to the Premier League season, saw three first team players miss training this morning.

Asmir Begovic and Geoff Cameron were instantly ruled out of training with illness, while Phil Bardsley was forced to head home early after he reported feeling unwell.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes is hopeful that the trio can shake off their virus in time to face Liverpool.

But the existence of a virus in and around the Stoke squad is sure to be a concern for the Welshman, especially as the club's Under-21s have been hit by illness.

Hughes told his club's site: "We're struggling at the moment with a little bit of a virus. It started with the Under-21s and we've had to close down their operation really and keep everyone away from the first team.

"Unfortunately, there's been a little bit of sickness in the senior squad this morning and two or three players have been sent back home.

"We hope we've caught it in time and didn't spread to the rest of the group. We're hopeful that it’s not the same virus the Under-21s have had."
