Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy has hit out at Noel Hunt's treatment at Leeds United and is happy to have snapped up the striker on loan.

Hunt has linked up with McCarthy at Portman Road after joining on a short-term loan until 3rd January, having been frozen out of the first team picture at Leeds.

McCarthy, who rates the former Reading striker highly, believes the way he was treated in Yorkshire derailed his career, and unfairly so.

Asked why it has not worked for Hunt at Leeds by the BBC, McCarthy replied: "Well part of the reason might be that somebody announced he was on £25,000 a week at Leeds and apparently he can't walk down the street in Leeds because they turn on him.

"So that's not helped him at all."

And the Ipswich boss joked: "And he wasn't actually, he was on £24,950."

McCarthy is sure that chatter about Hunt's alleged pay packet impacted him on the pitch, pointing the finger at Leeds owner Massimo Cellino.

"He's no where near that [£25,000]. Somebody, I think it was the new owner…it was said before the takeover and it's really had a detrimental effect on him and his career at Leeds."
