Per Mertesacker has stressed that it is time for Arsenal to focus on getting back to winning ways in the Premier League.

Arsenal registered a comfortable 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund last night to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

After a few trying weeks, Arsenal were back to winning ways, but Mertesacker pointed out that they need to start performing in the league and get their season back on track.

The Gunners have suffered two back-to-back league defeats against Swansea and Manchester United and are currently eighth in the league table on 17 points.

The German defender stressed that Arsenal need to show the same strength of character in the league that they showed last night and make a strong comeback on the domestic front.

“We were very convincing [against Dortmund]”, Mertesacker told the club’s official site.

“We have to show character and that is what makes me really happy for the next few games, because we have to sharpen up in the Premier League as well.

“Saturday is a good chance to show everyone that we are still alive. We have secured Champions League [last 16] football and that gives us a life, but that has nothing to do with the Premier League.

“We have to come back in the Premier League and that is the next target.”

Arsenal will take an away trip to the Midlands to take on West Brom at the Hawthorns on Saturday.
