Arsenal are ready to make an £8m bid for Aston Villa’s Dutch international defender and Manchester United target Ron Vlaar.

Vlaar’s contract is set to expire next summer and there have been no indications that the defender will sign a new contract with the Villans, with his agent recently claiming now might be the best time for his client to take the next step in his career.

Louis van Gaal is a fan of the defender and has considered Vlaar as a viable option for the winter transfer window as Manchester United undergo a serious injury crisis in their defence.

But Arsenal are the club who are ready to follow up on their interest and are preparing a bid for the Aston Villa defender.

Arsene Wenger is keen to sign an experienced head for Arsenal’s leaky defence and is ready to make an £8m bid for Vlaar, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

The Frenchman did say today that he is intending to buy at least one player in January and it seems Vlaar is the man Wenger is trying to sign.

It remains to be seen whether Van Gaal decides to jump into the race as Manchester United are also in need of an experienced defender to shore up their injury ravaged rearguard.
