Kolo Toure has defended under fire Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and said that the Northern Irishman deserves time, as he is still learning at the highest level.

After the high of finishing second in the league last season, Liverpool are going through a poor run of form in this campaign.

Currently 12th in the table, the Reds have lost three on the trot in the Premier League and must win their last group game to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.

Rodgers is under fire from his critics for various reasons ranging from team selection to his summer recruitment policy, but Toure has defended his manager.

The Ivorian, who has played under Arsene Wenger and Roberto Mancini, said that the Northern Irishman is one of the best managers in the Premier League and deserves time and patience.

"He's one of the best managers in the Premier League", Toure told the club’s official site.

"In terms of the managers I've worked with, he's right up there. You need time as a manager. Last season was unbelievable, this season has been more tough. But I think he has done a great job for this club and we like him.”

Regarding Liverpool’s struggles in the Champions League, Toure said that this is Rodgers’ first season in Europe’s elite club competition and he deserves the chance to learn from his mistakes in the tournament.

"He's young as a manager and this is the first time he has managed in the Champions League. The Champions League is tough. We've seen that with teams like Manchester City. You have to learn about it.

"He is learning. At the end of the day he's a fair guy who is working hard and gives 100 per cent every day. That's why I am sure we will get out of this spell we're in.”
