Sunderland boss Gus Poyet believes that facing Leeds United in the FA Cup third round will be a special occasion for both clubs.

The tie is a repeat of the 1973 FA Cup final, which saw then-second division Sunderland beat then-holders Leeds 1-0 at Wembley, causing a big shock in the process.

Now the tables are turned somewhat with Leeds being a second tier outfit and Sunderland in the Premier League.

And Poyet is looking forward to the occasion, with Leeds due to visit the Stadium of Light to provide the opposition as the Black Cats kick off their bid to reach Wembley.

Poyet told his club's feed: "To be drawn against Leeds in the FA Cup for the first time since that game in 1973 is something special."

"A home tie is always preferred and more so this time, because of the number of games we will have played in a short period.

"I know Leeds well from my time there, it won’t be an easy game – no cup games are – but it is one we will all look forward to."

At present Sunderland sit 14th in the Premier League standings and drew their last game, 0-0 at Liverpool.

Leeds meanwhile are 16th in the Championship table and at the weekend went down 4-1 away at Ipswich Town.
