Sampdoria are poised to win the race to sign Josip Ilicic from Fiorentina, where he has fallen out of favour.

The Slovenian midfielder, who has been linked with a number of clubs, including English Championship side Leeds United, is keen to move on in the new year in search of regular first team football.

According to Italian daily La Nazione, Fiorentina have agreed a deal with Sampdoria which will see Ilicic head to Genoa on loan in January.

Sampdoria will also have the right to sign the midfielder on a permanent basis at the end of the season should he impress, for a set price of €6m.

It remains to be seen whether any of Ilicic's other suitors try to hijack the deal before the winter window opens.
