Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim was beaming with pride after his team achieved qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League last night.

The French side registered a 2-0 win over Zenit Saint Petersburg last night at home to top Group C and qualify for the round of 16 of the competition.

The Monaco manager was delighted with his team’s performance on the night and said qualification was not only important for the club, but also for the development of French football.

He also added that his team were perceived as the weakest side in their group, but Monaco were happy to prove their detractors wrong by topping the group.

“Qualification is important, but it is more important for the players, for Monaco and for French football. It is never easy to reach the last 16”, Jardim told UEFA.

“In August, Monaco were regarded as the worst team in the group; tonight we won it.

“We are top of the group. Our aim was to qualify, but we are top because we are the team who got the most points, so we deserve it.”

Even though they qualified as group winners, Monaco scored just four goals in their six games.
