Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has fired a warning to Schalke and put his suitors on red alert by insisting he does not want to play to finish in third or fourth place in the Bundesliga every year.

Huntelaar, who has been linked with English Premier League duo Arsenal and Liverpool, has less than a year remaining on his current contract.

Schalke are desperate to keep him at the club and have been discussing a new deal with the striker.

But all is not done and dusted and for Huntelaar, who is believed to be being offered around €7m per season to stay put, footballing reasons must take priority. Indeed, the Dutchman wants to see Schalke show their ambition to push Bayern Munich for the German title.

"I have always said that I feel good at Schalke", Huntelaar was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.

"But I do not think we should play to finish third or fourth. We want more.

"For this, the whole club must aim."

At 31 years old, Huntelaar's next contract is likely to be his final big pay day, while it may also be now or never for a striker who has claimed to be keen to play in the Premier League at some point in his career.
