Arsene Wenger is set to try his luck with Schalke for defender Benedikt Howedes as he seeks to bolster Arsenal's options at the back.

The Gunners were forced to play Mathieu Debuchy as a centre-back in yesterday's 4-1 win over Newcastle and though Wenger was pleased with the Frenchman's performance he has vowed to look to sign another defender next month.

The man Wenger will try for first is none other than Howedes, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

The Arsenal boss is prepared to put around £15m in front of Schalke in the hope that they will sell the defender mid-season.

Howedes has been linked with two other English clubs in the form of Manchester City and Manchester United and has admitted he would like to play abroad in future.

"Of course, I have always said that one day I want to have an experience abroad, learn a new language, get used to a different club and learn about a new environment, but there is still time", he said in August.
