Former Bayern Munich captain Lothar Matthaus believes Borussia Dortmund need someone like Matthias Sammer to oversee operations at the club.

Dortmund dropped down to 16th in the Bundesliga table after they suffered their ninth league defeat of the season away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

A team that won two back-to-back league titles in 2011 and 2012 are currently struggling to find form and are involved in a relegation dogfight at the bottom end of the table.

Jurgen Klopp still believes he has enough quality to turn things around, but admits that his side have some serious problems to take care of.

Matthaus, a World Cup winner with Germany, feels Dortmund need an authoritative figure at the club who will set the house in order, someone like Bayern Munich sporting director Sammer.

“Too many things are being swept under the carpet at Dortmund”, the former Bayern Munich captain told Sky Deutschland.

“I would recommend someone like Matthias Sammer at Bayern Munich to Borussia Dortmund.

“Someone who criticises and who gets straight to the point too.”
