Michael Carrick believes that a strong festive period for Manchester United would catapult the side into the title race to battle Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Red Devils won their sixth match in a row yesterday by beating rivals Liverpool 3-0 at Old Trafford.

They are now third in the Premier League and have cut the gap to second placed Manchester City to just five points.

Despite admitting to not playing at their best, Manchester United are pushing ahead strongly and continually picking up points.

And for Carrick, should that continue over the busy Christmas period the sky will be the limit for the 2013 Premier League champions.

The midfielder, who operated in defence yesterday, told MUTV: "We are always looking at how we can get to the top.

"All in all we are in a pretty decent position at the moment.

"We need to stay up there, we need to stay in touch, then come Christmas and come January, as we've said for many years now, if we are up there challenging then we will give ourselves a great chance."

Manchester United are in action against Aston Villa (away), Newcastle (home), Tottenham Hotspur (away) and Stoke (away) over the festive period.
