Brendan Rodgers feels his Liverpool side recorded a "great victory" over Championship outfit Bournemouth in the League Cup this evening.

The Reds marched past the Cherries 3-1 at Dean Court, avoiding a potential banana skin to book a semi-final clash with Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

For Rodgers, whose side were rebounding from a 3-0 defeat at Manchester United on Sunday, the result and performance were something to savour.

"It was an excellent performance. I thought at Old Trafford at the weekend, while I wasn't happy with the result, I was happy with our performance and I think we carried that on this evening", Rodgers told BBC Radio 5 live.

"Brilliant by the players, who showed a real calmness and patience with the ball. For 70-80% of the game we controlled it. Overall, it was a great victory for us.

"I think we had control of the game, but when you show patience, movement and technique as we did tonight then we are a very, very good side. Very good goals, and we could have had a couple of others – we created a few chances tonight."

Rodgers however was also keen to pay tribute to Bournemouth, who he feels are flying under Eddie Howe and who he hopes to see in the Premier League next season.

"But credit too to Bournemouth, and Eddie Howe is a fantastic manager. Hopefully they'll go on and get promoted from the Championship."

Next up for Liverpool is a visit from Arsenal at the weekend.
