Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that Thierry Henry was initially not confident about his goalscoring abilities.

The former French international announced his retirement from football yesterday after spending the last few seasons of his career in the MLS with New York Red Bulls.

Best known for his time at Arsenal, the Frenchman is a cult hero among the Gunners faithful and is widely regarded as one of the best players to wear the club’s colours.

He scored 226 goals for the Gunners and is the club’s all-time record goalscorer, but Wenger revealed that the forward was not always confident about his ability in front of goal.

Henry was a winger at Juventus when Wenger decided to take a gamble on him and brought the forward to north London in the summer of 1999.

“Initially, when I brought him from Juventus, my idea was to link him up with Nicolas Anelka”, the Arsenal manager told L’Equipe.

“But that summer Anelka joined Real Madrid and the idea had to be abandoned.

“Thierry didn’t immediately make it into the first eleven as there were others ahead of him in the pecking order. Everything changed, when one day I decided to develop him in the forward line.

“He said, ‘coach, I do not know how to score goals”, Wenger added.

“We can safely say that he has deceived the world.”
