Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans feels Steven Gerrard is still the club’s go-to player when things are not working out on the pitch.

Gerrard’s contract is set to expire next summer and Liverpool have offered a new deal to the midfielder, but it remains unsigned for the moment.

Brendan Rodgers has decided to use the Liverpool captain more carefully this season and the 34-year-old has often started on the bench to take care of his ageing legs.

But Evans feels the talismanic club captain is still playing some ‘great football’ and when the going gets tough Liverpool still look to Gerrard for inspiration.

The former Liverpool manager also believes the midfielder’s performances have improved since he has been deployed in a more attacking role in the last few weeks.

“Steven is still playing some great football”, Evans told BBC Radio 5 live.

“With all the players we bought in the summer, Steven is still the guy who makes it happen for Liverpool.

“Maybe his legs are not quite what it used to be, but then he has played in the deeper positions.

“Since he [Rodgers] has put him back up front he has looked dangerous and has created chances.”
