Brendan Rodgers admits he is hoping that Liverpool do not lose Raheem Sterling next summer, amid speculation of interest from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Sterling burst onto the scene under Rodgers and further cemented his status as one of the most promising young players in English football last term when he helped Liverpool challenge for the Premier League title.

However, Sterling has resisted initial attempts to convince him to pen a new contract at Liverpool and there is talk of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid being on his tail.

Asked whether the winger could follow Luis Suarez out of the Anfield exit door, Rodgers was quoted as saying by ITV: "Hopefully it is not going to be the case. We are trying to build something here.

"We were on a path for a couple of years and we have had to come off that path since the summer having lost some players and have had to regroup.

"He is a real talisman for this team. He has been a great example of the progress that a lot of the players have made here.

"He has gone from a youth team player to one of the top young players in European football."

And Rodgers is sure Liverpool will make every effort to retain Sterling.

"The club, I am sure, will work very hard [on his contract] and Raheem is happy here, he loves being a Liverpool player."
