Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling has saluted his side's 3-1 win over Bournemouth in a League Cup clash this evening, explaining he was happy to operate in an unfamiliar striking role.

Bournemouth had a golden chance to take the lead early on, but it was spurned and Liverpool started to grow into the game.

And the Reds took the lead in the 20th minute when, following a neat passing move, Sterling headed the ball home.

Lazar Markovic then doubled Liverpool's advantage in the 27th minute, before Sterling struck again in the 51st minute.

The Cherries did score a consolation however, when Dan Gosling struck in the 57th minute.

Sterling was handed the man of the match award and quickly praised his side for overcoming a difficult period to claim victory.

"Obviously it has been a difficult moment in the last few weeks and months, but the boys did well tonight and we played some good football", he told Sky Sports.

"I'm happy to be in and amongst the goals, but as long as the team win I'm happy."

And Sterling, played in an unfamiliar striking role, said he is happy to play wherever manager Brendan Rodgers wants him to.

"I like playing up there.

"I don't mind where the manager plays me. I'll always try and do a job for the team.

"I haven't played there since youth games."
