Antonio Conte feels Italian football has hit rock bottom, but believes there is hope for the future and a revival is still possible with the help of the big clubs in Italy.

The four-time world champions had to face the ignominy of being knocked out of this summer’s World Cup in the group stage, which led to Cesare Prandelli’s sacking.

Fresh from his three back-to-back league title wins with Juventus, Conte took charge of the Azzurri, but performances haven’t improved as much as he would have hoped.

Italy have won five of the six games that they have played after the World Cup, but three of those wins came against Malta, Azerbaijan and Albania, those too by the narrowest of margins.

The Netherlands have been their only big scalp and Conte is aware of the situation that Italian football finds itself in.

He admits that Italian football has reached its lowest point, but is hopeful of a revival in the future if the big clubs are ready to cooperate.

“It is a very critical period, we have reached the bottom”, Conte told Rai Sport.

“But we can dig ourselves out of the situation.

“We much reach an agreement with the clubs, but they also need to realise the importance and the future of the national team.”
