Liverpool have found their Alexis Sanchez in Raheem Sterling, manager Brendan Rodgers has hinted.

Rodgers tried to sign Sanchez from Barcelona in the summer, only to see the Chile international opt to join Arsene Wenger's Arsenal instead.

Against Manchester United in Sunday's 3-0 defeat, Rodgers used Sterling in an advanced striking position, choosing not to play a recognised striker at Old Trafford.

And again this evening against Bournemouth in the League Cup, a game Liverpool won 3-1, Rodgers fielded Sterling in an advanced position with no recognised striker.

For the Northern Irishman, who watched Sterling score a brace at Dean Court, he is Liverpool's answer to Sanchez.

"Raheem Sterling was brilliant. I played him as a striker, but you get different types of striker", he told BBC Radio 5 live.

"He's more of an Alexis Sanchez when he plays as a striker – he's not going to pin the defender.

"He plays in the spaces and he's got the speed to get in behind.

"A couple of great finishes and I'm very pleased for him", the Liverpool boss added.
